Permalink is a URL/Web structure of a specific web page of a website. This term originated from “permanent link” and with passage of time, it become shorter and called “permalink”.
To understand this concept, let’s take the help of an example. Suppose there is a website www.techblog.com, now this is main URL of the website. When you will click on it, you will land on the home page of that blog.
There are many web pages of techblog.com. When you click on a blog post and open it, the URL which is showing in address bar, changes from main URL to webpage URL.

Now this 2nd picture is showing the web address of a particular blog post / web page of a website. This permalinks structure is the web address of a particular blog post.
Importance of Permalink for SEO
Permalink in itself is an effective and useful technique of SEO. As SEO is the website or blog appearance in search engine, in the same way, permalink of a web page or blog post appears in search engine.
When a user enter query in search engine, he gets results in form of web pages of website which contains the keyword of user’s query. Search engine shows returning results not with the main URL structure of a website or blog, but is shows the permalink URL structure of web page. User clicks on some sites and get his answers.
Suppose Michal open Google chrome or any other search engine and enter this query “How to do the Site-Wide SEO of an event blog” and hit “enter”. Search engine shows the returning results which contains the keywords used by user in query.
Search engine when shows these results, it shows with two references. First it shows the title of post on which user click and lands on particular blog post or web page. Secondly it shows the permalink structure right under the post title in returning results. You can easily see in the following image.
In above image, the Red circle URL are the permalink structure of site post “2 Days Program…..”. The title of post is showing right above permalink.
This proved that how much permalink structure is a strong pillar of SEO foundation and how it is much more important for SEO of blog.
How to Create Permalink Structure for a Web Page?
There is very easy and few steps process to create the permalink structure of blog posts. If you are using blogger.com platform than follow the below step by step guide to create permalink structure.
- Go to blogger.com
- Go to dashboard and edit the one existing post or upload a new post.
- Click on the “Permalink” given at right side of page under “post setting”.
- When you click on “permalink”, two more types will open “automatic permalink and Customs permalink”.
- Click on automatic permalink.
- Now click on “Done”.
- If you want to create permalink of your own choice then click on “custom permalink” and here you can create your favorite permalink.
- But remember if you creating customs permalink don’t forget to mention the keywords of post title in it.
